MY WHY: the turtle who sparked the scaletuary
The promise that became a sanctuary
In 2003, a special turtle came into the life of Scaletuary founder, Jordan, & her name was Big Momma. She was a dinner-plate sized red ear slider bought from a pet store that had more attitude than size, and more wisdom than anyone gave her credit for. Though Jordan’s parents were not thrilled about Big Momma coming into the home, she ended up staying there for 11 years.
Throughout the years Big Momma became a teacher, comfort, and best friend. She opened the doors to more research and understanding on how to help different turtle species not just survive but thrive in captivity & the wild.
Big Momma & Jordan were side by side through elementary, middle, high school & even college. She was the best secret keeper, and a sneaky accomplice when coming along for car rides, restaurants, and even college classes. Being called the Crazy Turtle Lady was a compliment Jordan not only admired, but made it become her purpose in life.
In 2014 Big Momma’s health took a turn for the worse & a decision had to be made. Reluctantly, it was time to say goodbye. A promise was made that day, November 11-20-14, & that promise became a mission.
Since 2014, lots of training, workshops, volunteering, and education lead to becoming more prepared for any turtle case that walks through the door. Every injection given, cracked shell pieced back together, every life saved—is because of Big Momma.
Her story is our beginning, and her legacy lives on in every turtle that gets a second chance at life.
